This paper considers the issue about terminological differentiation of the concepts “utopia”, “anti-utopia” and “dystopia”, studies genre parameters of the declared phenomena. Interpretations of this concepts in Russian literary tradition (on the basis of works by B. Lanin, V. A. Chalikova, A. A. Dydrov) and in Western literary criticism (researches by G. Clayes, A. Aldridge) were studied and compared. Based on the studied material our own statements about genre and terminological differentiation of the concepts “anti-utopia” and “dystopia” were defined. During the research it was consistently shown that anti-utopia is a parody, derision and/or deformation of utopian ideals while dystopia is a depiction of a frightening world in which an element of a catastrophe can be found.
