This article explores how certain characteristics of time representation in Virginia Woolf’s The Years (1937) correlate with a general framework of the novel. It focuses on some of the narrative techniques (such as tunneling technique and using of flashbacks) that define writer’s work with time.
It is argued that these techniques have already been used by Woolf in her earlier works (Mrs. Dal-loway and To the Lighthouse), but they were significantly transformed to corre-spond to an unusual framework of The Years. Close reading shows that in her late novel Woolf synthesized two main types of time representation that had already been inherent for her prose. This article also argues that a mirror-like organization of time in the novel both defines its general structure and extends a motive of characters’ unwillingness to live in a present moment, which is a key motive for the plot of The Years.
